DayPlay

DayPlay is a personal project that helps people discover things to do in Oakland. It focuses more on families and dog owners but don’t worry – there’s hipster date options, too.

Problem

New moms have enough to worry about and sometimes it’s hard to make a decision. Besides, who wants to be couped up in the house all day? Especially, when you live in a great city like Oakland with lots of history and hidden gems.

To help my wife deal with this dilemma, I needed a website.

Solution

Wouldn’t it be great to have a website that could read your mind and make suggestions? Well, I tried to come up with the next best thing. Instead of forcing a user to navigate through directories, why not just ask them for some basic information to help aid them in the decision making process?

Some simple testing lead us to those core questions.

  • Do you want to be outside or inside?
  • Who will be with you?
  • What kind of activity do you want to be doing?

Using a Natural Language Form, I combined those questions into one sentence. I then pair the sentence the tags we’ve placed on each recommendation. Lastly, by incorporating the day’s weather forecast into the design, the decision process becomes a little bit easier.

Here’s how a rainy day played out…

Here’s another example where it was sunny and mom felt like getting some exercise with her daughter. We simply serve up a bunch of stroller friendly spaces outdoors and… voila!
